Description

Naqsh-e-Qalam, meaning the imprint of the pen, transforms the stole into parchment. The ivory base remains undyed, preserving the natural warmth of pure Ladakhi Pashmina. The sozni karigar uses thread instead of ink to create small buta, sketched in charcoal and touched with the lightest ice-blue, moving with the gentle rhythm of a careful hand. It feels like a page from a quiet manuscript, kept folded, found again, and read once more.

The fibre comes from pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the underbelly of the Changthangi goat at over 14,000 feet. It is handwoven in Srinagar on a traditional Kashmiri loom using fine twill, then given to a sozni karigar who creates each motif with single-thread needlework. The buta are evenly spaced across the fabric, calligraphic and never crowded, and all four edges have a hashia, a fine-line border stitched in the same charcoal color. The piece finishes with a clean self-fringe.

Sozni is one of the oldest needle arts in Kashmir, passed down through generations of karigar families. Each stole is made in small batches and signed by its maker. The fibre is cruelty-free, combed during the spring moult and never sheared, and the artisans receive fair wages. This is a piece made slowly, meant to be owned slowly. It can be worn for a season, kept for a lifetime, and passed on.
