Description

There is a particular turquoise that lives in old Mughal stonework — luminous, somewhere between sky and shallow water. Across that ground runs an all-over sozni jaal of bold paisleys and lotus forms in coral, lavender, and brick. Diwanin Urdu means both a royal court and a poet's collection — this jaal carries both.

The fibre is gathered from Ladakh's Changthangi goat above 14,000 feet, then spun and woven in Srinagar in fine twill. After dyeing in small batches, the cloth reaches a karigar who works the jaal in single-thread sozni — paisley by paisley, lotus by lotus, over many months. A self-fringe finishes the edge.

Sozni jaal, with its density and refinement, is one of Kashmir's slowest crafts. There is no industrial substitute, no shortcut, no second karigar; each piece is the patient work of a single needle over a single year. Fibre gathered without harm, fair daily wages paid, every shawl signed by its maker.
