Description

In Persian, neel is the deep blue of an evening sky. Shafaq is the amber that burns through it at the moment of dusk. This shawl is that moment held in cloth — a slate-blue ground alive with saffron embroidery, as if twilight had flowered and refused to fade.

Handwoven in Srinagar on a traditional Kashmiri loom, the ground is fine-twill pure Ladakhi Pashmina — light yet warm. Across it, a sozni artisan has worked an all-over arabesque jaal: trailing vines, small floral butis, kairi, and leaf sprigs in saffron, burnt orange, ivory, and crimson. Thousands of single-needle stitches, laid one by one.

A shawl of this embroidery density takes weeks of uninterrupted work by a single hand. It belongs to a lineage of Kashmiri sozni that predates Mughal patronage and has endured every rupture since.
