Description

An inky black Pashmina worked all over in bold sozni jaal — large blossoms, paisleys, and vines in coral, mustard, pink, and ivory. Gulshan-e-Shab is the Urdu phrase for night garden; the cloth reads exactly that way — flowers in full bloom against darkness.

Pure Pashmina from Ladakh's Changthangi goat — gathered above 14,000 feet at the spring moult, dyed once in deep black. Woven in Srinagar in fine twill, the cloth then reaches a sozni karigar; the entire jaal worked across the body in multi-tone single-thread needlework. A self-fringe finishes the edge.

The bold-blossom register on black is among Kashmir's most dramatic — looser and more wildflower than tightly-packed jaal, every flower given room to read against the ground. Best for occasions where the cloth is the statement. Many months of work. Cruelty-free fibre, fair-wage karigars, each shawl signed.
