Description

Yakh-e-Subh, the morning ice is the colour of the valley before the sun crosses the ridge, when frost still clings to the willow. The ground holds that exact shade: pale ice blue, thin as meltwater over stone. Along the edges runs a wide sozni hashia in rust, orange, and old gold, anchored by a generous kunj-buta at each corner.

The fibre is pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the Changthangi goat at altitudes above 14,000 feet. It is handwoven in Srinagar on a traditional Kashmiri loom in fine twill, then placed in the hands of a sozni karigar who works the wide ornamental hashia and the corner kunj-buta in single-thread needlework. The piece closes with a clean self-fringe.

The kunj-buta at each corner is worked in the old manner, the paisley form that Kashmiri karigars have carried in their hands for centuries. The hashia is built without a drawn pattern — the design lives in memory, transferred from one workshop to the next. The piece is made for the hours that ask for nothing, and the ones that ask for everything.
