Description

Atash-e-Khamosh, the silent fire, is the colour of embers when the flame has gone out, and only the heat remains in the ash. The ground holds that exact shade: charcoal grey, dense as cooled stone. Along the edges runs a wide sozni hashia in rust, orange, and old gold, anchored by a generous kunj-buta at each corner.

The fibre is pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the Changthangi goat at altitudes above 14,000 feet. It is handwoven in Srinagar on a traditional Kashmiri loom in fine twill, then placed in the hands of a sozni karigar who works the wide ornamental hashia and the corner kunj-buta in single-thread needlework. The piece closes with a clean self-fringe.

The kunj-buta, the corner paisley, is among the oldest signatures of Kashmiri shawl craft, carried within karigar households for generations. The hashia is worked from memory, without a drawn pattern, each motif passed from one hand to the next. Built for the quiet hours and the formal ones alike.
