Description

Sham-e-Khazaan, the evening of autumn, is when the light leaves the orchard, and the colors blend together. Mustard and aubergine, forest teal and dusty plum, charcoal at the edge. In this fading garden, the sozni karigar has set ivory buti in scattered squares—small cypress and leaf, white against the dusk. A line of pale needlework runs near the end, where the day pauses before night. This is a piece for quiet moments, for those who prefer depth over brightness.

The fibre is pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the underbelly of the Changthangi goat at altitudes above 14,000 feet. It is handwoven on a traditional Kashmiri loom in a charkhana, a multi-coloured check, where each square is made from naturally dyed yarn at the loom, not printed. After the cloth comes off the loom, a sozni karigar adds slender buti in ivory thread to select squares, each motif made with single-thread needlework. A fine hashia in matching ivory runs near the lower edge. The piece finishes with a clean self-fringe.

Charkhana is one of the oldest forms of Kashmiri loom craft. Every color change is set by hand, square by square. The sozni that follows is even rarer, a needlework tradition passed down in karigar families for generations. The fibre is cruelty-free, combed during the spring moult, and the artisans receive fair wages. This is a piece made slowly, meant to be owned slowly, and passed on.
