Some things are most beautiful in contrast. A single flame in a dark room. A garden that blooms in winter. The Siyah BAHAR is that contradiction made wearable. Woven from 100% pure Ladakhi Pashmina fibre, this shawl is hand-combed from the Changthangi goat on the high-altitude plateaus of Ladakh. It is then spun in the workshops of Srinagar. Within its threads lies a year of devoted craft. The midnight black base is vast and commanding, a canvas chosen not to be seen, but to make everything upon it radiate with greater force.
And radiate it does. The hand-embroidered Jamawar border runs the length in a continuous orchestra of floral motifs. There are full roses, curling vines, scattered blossoms, and layered leaves. Each is densely embroidered in bold chain stitch. The palette is spectacular: mustard gold, lavender purple, hot pink, teal blue, burnt orange, soft blush, and forest green. Each colour is vivid and unashamed against the dark ground. At the end, the artistry reaches its peak. Grand embroidered end panels erupt in sweeping, large-scale floral medallions and richly filled Jamawar compositions. These cover the surface in an almost overwhelming abundance of colour and craft.
