Description

Firdaus is the Persian word for paradise, the walled garden where every flower blooms at once and nothing fades. This shawl is that garden made real. Across a deep crimson ground, thousands of silk stitches form an unbroken lattice of floral medallions, each compartment a small garden of its own. There is only one in the world.

The ground is pure Ladakhi Pashmina, handwoven in Srinagar on a traditional Kashmiri loom. Over it, a master artisan has worked hand-embroidered Sozni Jamawar in fine silk thread, the rarest and most lustrous form of the craft. Every medallion is built stitch by stitch in jewel-toned silk, gold, green, blue, rose and ivory glowing against the crimson, framed by plain crimson borders.

A shawl of this density takes more than three years of a single artisan's life. It belongs to the highest tier of Kashmiri embroidery, the kind of piece once commissioned by courts and made perhaps once in a generation. Acquired once, kept always, and passed down as the heirloom it was born to be.
