Description

Do-Jahan means two worlds. This shawl holds two of them, one on each face. Turn it one way and it is a fine Kani Pashmina of wine and natural stripe, closing in a garden border of woven flowers. Turn it over and it becomes a deep textured weave, warm as a blanket, a second shawl living inside the first.

Handwoven in Kashmir from pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the Changthangi goat. This is a do-rukha (reversible) Kani shawl, finished on both faces with no wrong side, wide decorative borders framing each end. A master kani-baf wove the floral borders from a coded talim, while the reverse carries a thick raised texture, warm as a blanket. Reversible Kani sits at the very top of the craft hierarchy.

A reversible Kani that is also a blanket on one face is among the most ambitious things a Kashmiri loom attempts, two shawls woven as one. This is a connoisseur and collector piece, made in the smallest number. One object, two worlds, kept for a lifetime and handed on.
