Description

Quiet on the surface, relentless underneath. The ground is a natural undyed cream, and it is covered corner to corner in white embroidery worked so close to the base tone that the shawl reads as one soft surface until the light catches the stitches.

Every paisley and vine is hand-embroidered in fine Sozni, white thread tracing an unbroken jaal with no ground left plain. Filling a shawl this completely is months at the needle, one artisan holding a single design across the whole cloth. Tone-on-tone is the harder discipline, all texture and no contrast, and it rewards the man who values the making over the display.

The base is pure Ladakhi Pashmina, warm and weightless beneath the embroidery. A piece of this order carries a black kurta, a bandhgala or an ivory ensemble with equal ease. This is the exclusive end of Kashmir's craft, made to keep and to pass on.
