Description

This is Kani, the oldest and most demanding of Kashmir's weaves, where the pattern is not stitched onto the cloth but built into it on the loom. A dark ground carries a full field of flowers and paisley in teal, magenta, orange and green, every colour worked into the weave itself.

Kani is made with small wooden bobbins, one for each shade, the weaver advancing the design a single line at a time by hand. A shawl of this size and colour is many months at the loom, read from a coded pattern that only a handful of weavers can still follow. The result sits differently from embroidery, the design part of the fabric rather than laid over it, with the same picture reading softly on the reverse.

The base is pure Ladakhi Pashmina, warm and light despite the density of the weave. A piece this rare is worn plainly, over a black kurta, so it carries the look alone. This is the summit of Kashmir's loom craft, made to keep and to pass on.
