Description

Sarv-o-Gul — the cypress and the rose — names a thousand-year-old image in Persian verse: the eternal upright beside the ephemeral bloom. The stole carries that pairing at its borders, dark cypress columns standing between panels of full-blown garden, woven into a pale undyed ground.

Hand-woven in Kashmir from pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the Changthangi goat. The borders are worked in the Kani technique by a master kani-baf reading from a coded talim, each thread inserted by a small wooden toji. Vertical sarv panels in charcoal and ochre alternate with gul panels in magenta, turquoise, lime, and saffron — built into the weave, not laid on top.

This is among the harder Kani compositions to read on the loom — alternating solid and floral panels demand the talim be re-coded line by line. The ground is kept as-combed in its true ivory shade. A connoisseur piece, made to be handed down.
