Description

Tilism means the enchantment, the spell or talisman of old Persian tales that turned an ordinary thing into something charged with magic. This shawl works that spell in reverse, drawing a whole garden out of the dark. The body is deep black, and from it the border conjures flowers so fine and so many-coloured they seem lit from within.

Handwoven in Kashmir from pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the Changthangi goat. The body is dyed a deep even black. The border is worked in the Kani technique by a master kani-baf reading from a coded talim, an intricate floral jaal of star-flowers, lotus, and chinar leaves in red, blue, purple, green, and turquoise, finer and denser than ordinary Kani allows.

This density of fine colour on a black ground is among the most painstaking Kani a weaver attempts, each small flower set petal by petal. Kani is the most exclusive of Kashmiri weaves. A collector piece for evening, intricate enough to study for years and keep for a lifetime.
