Description

Nginavat is the Kashmiri word for twilight, the hour this saree holds in its colour. The body is a do-rangi cloth, blue and a warm undertone woven against each other so the drape shifts violet to slate as it moves, like dusk settling over the Dal. The pallu opens into a woven garden, and a fine border runs the length of the fall.

Handwoven in Kashmir from pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the Changthangi goat. To carry Kani across a full saree is among the rarest undertakings of the craft, six yards worked by a master kani-baf reading from a coded talim, each colour set by hand with a small wooden toji. The pallu and border hold a multi-colour floral jaal on ivory, framed by fine blue and magenta bands.

A Kani saree is a piece almost no loom attempts, the technique of the shawl carried across the length and drape of six yards. Kani is the most exclusive of Kashmiri weaves, and a Kani Pashmina saree stands among the rarest objects the valley makes. A collector piece in the truest sense, woven to be worn on the greatest occasions and handed down.
