Description

Gulistan means the rose garden, the title Saadi gave his masterpiece eight centuries ago and one of the oldest images of paradise in Persian thought. This shawl is a gulistan made cloth. A deep red ground carries roses from end to end, full blooms in pink, magenta, green, and blue, the whole field in flower with no plain ground anywhere.

Handwoven in Kashmir from pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the Changthangi goat. This is a Kani Jamawar, the fully woven shawl that stands at the summit of the craft. A master kani-baf read the entire rose garden from a coded talim and built it thread by thread, setting each colour by hand with a small wooden toji. The work took between one and two years on a single loom.

An all-over Kani Jamawar in full colour is the rarest thing the Kashmiri loom makes, the kind of shawl that once dressed courts and now rests in museums. This one is unrepeated. Only a single piece exists, and there will be no second. A collector shawl in the truest sense, woven to be kept and handed down.
