Description

Bagh-e-Bahisht means the garden of paradise, the walled garden of Persian imagination from which the very word paradise descends. This shawl is that garden made cloth. Nowhere on it is there plain ground. From end to end the field is a living jaal of paisley, vine, blossom, and tree, each form woven in its own colour, the whole surface in bloom at once.

Handwoven in Kashmir from pure Ladakhi Pashmina, combed from the Changthangi goat. This is a Kani Jamawar, the fully woven shawl that stands at the summit of the craft. A single master kani-baf read the entire design from a coded talim and built it thread by thread, inserting each colour with a small wooden toji. The work took close to three years on one loom.

A Kani Jamawar of this density is the rarest thing the Kashmiri loom makes, the kind of piece that once passed between courts and now rests in museums. Only one exists. There is no second. This is the single most important shawl in the collection, made for the one person who understands what three years at a loom means.
