Description

Restraint and richness in one piece. The ground is deep black and mostly left open, so each embroidered motif stands clear rather than merging into a covered field. Large paisley clusters gather near the fall, with smaller floral sprigs rising up the body.

Every motif is worked by needle in fine Sozni, multicolour thread building each paisley and flower in close detail against the dark ground. Placing the work this way, motif by motif with space between, asks as sure a hand as filling a field, since nothing is hidden and every cluster is read on its own. The black sets the colour at its most vivid, gold and green and rose lifting cleanly off it.

The base is pure Ladakhi Pashmina, warm and light in the drape. A piece like this carries a black kurta or a bandhgala with quiet authority, the embroidery doing the work. This is the exclusive end of Kashmir's craft, made to keep and to pass on.
