Description

Kani in a folk register, and all the better for it. The body is a deep charcoal-brown, plain and grounding, so the colour that gathers at the ends reads even brighter against it.

The fall carries the whole story. Tall floral sprigs are woven across it in pink, orange, teal and green, rising from broad bands of red and amber stripe, the pattern built on the loom a line at a time with the kani technique rather than stitched on after. Because the colour is woven through, the design shows on both faces and moves with the cloth. Raw natural fringe finishes each end, part of the piece's earthy, unpolished character.

The base is pure Ladakhi Pashmina, warm and light in the drape. This is Kani for a man who wears colour with a free hand, easy over a black kurta or thrown open across a coat. A rare weave made to keep.
